An explosion outside a kindergarten in eastern China has killed at least seven people as local authorities rush to help dozens of people injured, according to reports.
The blast came at about 4:50 p.m. local time Thursday as parents arrived to pick their children up from Chuangxin Kindergarten in Fengxian, a city in China’s Jiangsu province.
Two died at the scene while five more were pronounced dead at a local hospital, state media channel CGTV reported.
Nearly 60 people were wounded, nine of whom were seriously hurt, government officials said.
Graphic video posted on state media showed dozens of adults and young children lying still on the ground at the school. Others, covered in dust and debris, are seen walking around, seemingly in shock.
One snippet shows medics treating a lifeless child laid out on a stretcher.
Officials have not said what caused the blast, but a witness identified as Shi told the Global Times newspaper that it was from a gas cylinder at a roadside stall.
