JERSEYVILLE, ILL. – A Jerseyville, Illinois police officer was transported to the hospital after being shot twice while responding to a robbery early Tuesday morning.
According to police, officers responded to an alarm at DJ’s Bar and Grill in downtown Jerseyville just before 1:15 a.m. When officers arrived, the suspect started to flee the scene. Police chased the suspect for several blocks when they say the suspect turned and fired a weapon, striking an officer twice.
Officers returned fire striking the suspect “multiple times,” police said.
The officer struck was transported to a nearby hospital and is listed in critical condition. He was wearing a bullet-proof vest at the time of the incident.
The suspect was transported to the Jerseyville hospital where he was pronounced dead.
